It isn’t the most glamorous topic, but it may be the most important one. You can own the best toy in the world, premium silicone with a thousand settings: if you don’t clean it properly, you’re putting your intimate health at risk. And, let’s be honest, plenty of people aren’t quite sure how to do it.
In this guide we explain, step by step, how to clean sex toys according to their material, how to store them, and which intimate hygiene habits make sense day to day. No fuss.
Why cleaning matters so much
The skin in intimate areas is sensitive and has a natural balance of good bacteria. A poorly washed toy can build up traces of lube, body fluids and bacteria that upset that balance. The result: irritation, itching and, in some cases, infections. Nothing a good routine can’t prevent.
The golden rule: before and after
Always wash a toy before its first use (new products may carry dust or packaging residue) and after every use. It sounds obvious, but it’s the rule people forget most, especially afterwards, when all you want to do is sleep.
A simple trick: keep the cleaner and a small towel on your bedside table. If it’s within reach, it gets done.
How to clean by material
Silicone. The most common material in quality products. Wash with warm water and mild, unscented soap, or with a dedicated toy cleaner. If the product is fully waterproof and has no motor, you can even boil it for a few minutes. If it has a motor, never submerge it unless the manufacturer says it’s submersible.
ABS and hard plastics. Warm water and mild soap, or a dedicated cleaner. Do not boil.
Glass and stainless steel. Very easy to clean and happy with hot water. Avoid sudden temperature changes with glass.
Porous materials (TPE, “jelly”, rubber). Cheaper, but harder to keep clean, because micro-pores give bacteria somewhere to hide. Wash carefully and, if possible, use with a condom. If you notice a smell or discolouration, it’s time to replace it.
Battery-powered products. Check the water resistance before washing. Protect the charging port and never charge the product while it’s still wet.
Toy cleaner: is it worth it?
It isn’t essential, but it makes life much easier. These are sprays or foams designed for these materials: they clean without damaging the surface and often don’t need rinsing. Ideal if you want a quick solution. You’ll find several in our intimate hygiene section.
What to avoid: alcohol, bleach, harsh washing-up liquid and scented wipes. They damage materials and can irritate the skin.
Drying and storage
After washing, let the toy air-dry completely or pat it dry with a clean, lint-free towel. Store each product in its own fabric pouch, away from dust, direct light and heat. Don’t let silicone products touch each other: some materials react and turn sticky.
A drawer just for this, with the pouches, cleaner and lube, solves everything and keeps it all discreet.
What about intimate hygiene?
The same principles apply to your body. For intimate areas, choose cleansing gels with a suitable pH and no strong fragrance. There’s no need to overdo it: washing too often, or with harsh products, also upsets the natural balance.
Peeing after sex is advice many gynaecologists give, especially to women prone to urinary infections. And if you use lube, choose one that’s compatible with the toy and your skin: in our intimate care section you’ll find water-based, silicone-based and hybrid options.
Sharing toys
If you share toys with a partner, wash them between users or put a condom on the toy. This is especially important if the toy moves from one area of the body to another.
When to replace a toy
No toy lasts forever. Replace it if you notice cracks, changes in texture, stains that won’t shift or lingering smells. It’s a small investment in your health.
A simple five-step routine
For anyone who likes things practical, here’s the routine in short:
1. After use, remove the batteries or switch the product off. 2. Wash with warm water and mild soap, or apply a dedicated cleaner. 3. Rinse well, if the cleaner requires it. 4. Dry with a clean towel or let it air-dry, no rush. 5. Store it in its pouch, in a cool, dark drawer.
Three minutes at most. And it makes all the difference to the life of the product and to your health.
When travelling
If you take toys on a trip, pack a travel-size cleaner and a fabric pouch too. Many products have a travel lock that stops them switching on in your suitcase, a small detail that avoids awkward moments at the airport. And if you fly with hand luggage only, remember that liquids have a volume limit.
Warning signs
If you feel burning, persistent itching, unusual discharge or pain after using a product, stop using it and see a doctor or gynaecologist. It could be a reaction to the material or the lube, or an infection that needs treatment. There’s nothing to be embarrassed about: healthcare professionals deal with these questions all the time.
And if you’re allergic to latex, always check the materials of your products and condoms.
Frequently asked questions
Can I put it in the dishwasher? Only some motor-free silicone, glass or steel products allow it. If in doubt, don’t risk it.
Will ordinary soap do? Yes, as long as it’s mild and unscented. Rinse well.
How long does a good toy last? With proper care, several years.
